Do you need a CPA (Certified Public Accountant)?
Neither the IRS nor the states require paid tax preparers to be CPAs. Unless an
individual's situation is highly complex, it is not necessary to engage a CPA to
prepare the annual tax return.
The official CPA designation reflects that the accountant was able to pass
standardized testing.
Always be sure that your paid tax preparer is
registered with the IRS as required beginning January 1, 2011. Annual renewal
registration is required, as well as continuing education, and beginning in
2013, successful testing, in order to prepare tax returns for compensation. |
